Viet Nam Government and International Partners Join Forces to Strengthen Prevention and Response against Avian influenza A (H7N9)

Hanoi, 06 May 2013 – In response to the emergence of a new strain of avian influenza A(H7N9) in China, Viet Nam’s Government has called on international partners to help mobilize resources to ensure early detection, prevention and control of the H7N9 virus in order to limit transmission and minimize the disease impact in both human and poultry populations in Viet Nam.

WHO urges greater efforts in preserving gains made against malaria

HANOI, 24 April 2013 – On World Malaria Day (25 April), the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Western Pacific Region urges Member States to remain steadfast in the fight against malaria by maintaining and intensifying the progress achieved towards its control and elimination. In the Western Pacific, the malaria morbidity rate fell by 46% and the malaria mortality rate by 73% between 2000 and 2011.

World Immunization Week in the Western Pacific Region

HANOI, 18 April 2013 – On World Immunization Week (24 to 30 April), the World Health Organization (WHO) urges Member States to scale up routine immunization services to stop endemic measles transmission. Measles incidence in the Western Pacific Region declined to six cases per million of population in 2012 from 12 cases per million of population in 2011. WHO encourages countries to intensify vaccination efforts and improve disease surveillance systems to ensure the elimination of the measles virus from the Region.

    Delegates at the Geneva meeting expressed strong support for the ideas underlying universal health coverage: that everyone, irrespective of their ability to pay, should have access to the health services they need, without putting their families at financial risk.
