International Health Regulations 2005

New obligations, new opportunities

With the world facing new threats arising from emerging diseases and other public health risks, the International Health Regulations were substantially revised to confront these new challenges. The revised Regulations or "IHR (2005)" were unanimously adopted by the fifty-eighth World Health Assembly on 23 May 2005 and entered into force on 15 June 2007 for all countries that have agreed to be bound by them (States Parties).

The IHR (2005) are a legally-binding global framework for preventing, protecting against, controlling and providing a public health response to the international spread of disease while avoiding unnecessary interference with international traffic and trade.
