Adolescent and young people constitue close to 23.6% of the total population in the Western Pacific Region. Adolescent girls and young women make up 47.8% of those in this age group. Young people in the Region today are healthier and better educated and have greater economic opportunities than ever before. At the same time, they face new and complex challenges and risks.

The Western Pacific Region has seen considerable improvements in women's health, including longer life expectancy, declines in the number of children per woman, an increase in maternal health service coverage and a decrease in maternal mortality. These gains, however, have been uneven across and within countries.
