Healthy Islands

WHO activities to support the South Pacific

Healthy Settings: These are the building blocks towards healthy islands, which include school, workplaces, health facilities, settlements, villages, communities etc with the simple definition of places where people live, work and play together. The settings approach forms the core of Health Promotion activities in the areas of communicable, non communicable and health system, an emphasis that the respective meetings of the Ministers of Health of the Pacific continue to identify as priority issues for the Pacific.

Health Promotion Foundation: This initiative is being progressed in a few Pacific Island Countries following the Vic-health success story of establishing mechanism for sustainable funding for health promotion activities. Tuvalu, Kiribati, French Polynesia, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga are currently advancing their process with support from WHO.

Pacific Prolead: This multi-year proposal for capacity building in Health Promotion in the Pacific is awaiting possible funding.
