World No Tobacco Day 2010
Theme: Gender and Tobacco
31 May is World No Tobacco Day. The theme for this year's World No Tobacco Day is 'Gender and Tobacco' with emphasis on marketing to women.
World No Tobacco Day 2010 Global Launch
The international launch of the 23rd World No Tobacco Day was held in Tokyo, Japan, on May 31, 2010. The launch featured a speech by the Regional Director highlighting the burden of tobacco on women worldwide, and the strategies of marketing to women used by the tobacco industry. This year’s theme was Gender, women, and the tobacco epidemic, and focused on the harmful effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls. The need for governments to ban all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship and to eliminate tobacco smoke in all public and work places as provided in the WHO FCTC was emphasized.
A press conference was held at the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. A symposium about the theme was held at the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo, an official WHO Collaborating Centre. The new WHO monograph, "Gender, women, and the tobacco epidemic", was presented at the event.

The World No Tobacco Day Award is given to individuals or organizations in recognition of their outstanding contribution in developing, implementing and promoting tobacco control policies and programmes.
