Tobacco free initiative
Consultative Meeting on the Draft Regional Action Plan 2010-2014 for the Tobacco-Free Initiative
Manila, Philippines, 27 - 30 April 2009
1. BACKGROUND
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Regional Action Plan 2005-2009 have provided the framework for action to curb the tobacco epidemic in countries. Encouraging progress has been made that needs to be sustained in the years to come.
A draft Regional Action Plan covering the next five years (2010‑2014) has been developed by the TFI Unit and is aligned to the Medium Term Strategic Plan 2008‑2013 for the Western Pacific. The content of the document builds on results of a preliminary review of the previous Regional Action Plan 2005-2009 and recommendations from the Workshop on Sustaining Action on the FCTC (August 2008, Manila). At both processes it was noted that work on cessation should be strengthened.
As part of the review process, a consultative meeting of national focal points and international experts is proposed to derive inputs and comments prior to its finalization. A training on cessation will also be conducted for the national focal points.
2. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the meeting the participants would have:
a. Reviewed and critiqued the draft Regional Action Plan of the Tobacco-Free Initiative for 2010-2014; and
b. Trained on basic principles and skills in providing brief advise for cessation.
