Stop TB
Joint Pacific TB and HIV/AIDS Managers' Meeting
Nadi, Fiji, 23 - 26 May 2009
With an estimated 1600 new tuberculosis (TB) cases every year, the burden of TB in the 20 Pacific island countries and areas, excluding Papua New Guinea, is relatively small. However, in several Pacific island countries and areas, case notification rates considerably exceed the overall case notification rate in the Western Pacific Region of 75 per 100 000 population. This significant burden of TB, the emergence of multidrug resistant TB, and the increasing number of TB-HIV cases in several countries continue to make TB control a priority in the Pacific.
It is necessary for TB programme managers to review progress and address emerging issues in the Pacific island countries and areas, including the prevention and management of multi-drug resistant TB and TB-HIV co-infection.
This meeting of TB managers, which is jointly organized with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, will be held in Nadi, Fiji from 23 to 26 May 2009. The 23rd of May will be devoted for the meeting among TB and HIV managers following a two-day meeting for programme managers of STIs and HIV/AIDS.
