Treating leprosy
MDT cures leprosy, stops transmission and prevents disabilities
Leprosy is a curable disease and, when treated in the early stages, disability can be avoided. WHO recommends the use of multidrug therapy (MDT) for the treatment of leprosy. MDT was introduced to the Western Pacific Region in 1985 and there has been 100% coverage of the Region since 1994. The development of this treatment h
as been a crucial step toward the control of leprosy, making elimination attainable. It consists of three drugs: dapsone, rifampicin and clofazimine. This combination kills the germ and prevents the occurrence of drug resistance. MDT is safe, effective and easily administered in the field. It is available free of charge to all leprosy patients in the world.
