Disasters in the Region
Viet Nam Typhoon
GENERAL INFORMATION

Three powerful storms struck the nation of Viet Nam in the space of barely two months.
After causing severe damage to the Philippines, Typhoon Ketsana, with maximum winds at the centre of 118-149kph, hit Viet Nam on 29 September 2009. Most affected areas include central coastal regions such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai. Houses, rice fields and vegetable gardens have been damaged.
Two weeks later, on 15 October 2009, Typhoon Parma made landfall in Viet Nam, bringing heavy rains to Quang Ninh and Ha Tinh. Preemptive measures by the Government and partner agencies significantly reduced damage to property and loss of life.
Finally, on 3 November, Typhoon Mirinae struck Viet Nam, causing heavy flooding in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue to Phu Yen and triggering a landslide in Quang Nam province.
