GENERAL INFORMATION
A tsunami hit Samoa and American Samoa following an 8.0 magnitude earthquake in the south of the main Samoan Island chain. Villages, houses, buildings, and communication lines were damaged as sea water surged inland. Information on primary areas and number of people affected will be provided as soon as initial assessment results are in.

HEALTH IMPACT
The Ministry of Health is conducting a rapid assessment with other government agencies for health impact, number of casualties and damages to health facilities.
RESPONSE
The government in partnership with UN agencies is assessing the damages and needs of affected communities. Priority response activities are being organized.
The Ministry of Health is in constant communication with other government agencies and other health partners for initial health needs.
International Response
UN agencies are closely monitoring the impacts and other response activities. The World Health Organization (WHO) is in close communication with the Ministry of Health and other UN agencies for information sharing and provision of necessary health and technical support.
