Regional Director's Message

Dr Shin Young-soo

This web site provides information on the work of the World Health Organization in the Western Pacific Region.

The Western Pacific Region ranges from Mongolia in the north to New Zealand in the south and from the western border of China to the Pitcairn islands in the mid-Pacific. The countries and areas of the Region include the world’s most populous nation and small island states with populations of only a few thousand people. They comprise some of the world’s poorest nations and some of the richest.

The Region’s diversity poses particular challenges to public health. WHO meets these challenges through our team of technical professionals in Manila, our staff based in countries throughout the Region and specialist consultants. We work closely with governments and other partners to formulate and implement health programmes and activities to bring about better health and a better quality of life for everyone in the Region.

I want WHO to be an accessible, open and responsive organization. This website is one of the ways in which we can achieve this. I hope you will spend some time looking through our site and that you will find it useful and interesting. Do contact us if you have comments.
