WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr Shin Young-soo awarded plaques of appreciation to former health ministers of Tonga, Sione Tapa and Viliami Ta'u Tangi.

The plaques honoured both men as dedicated public health servants, colleagues and true friends of WHO.

Dr Tapa was Minister of Health from 1970 to 1996. Dr Shin commended him for overseeing an outstanding public health system in Tonga and for his generous creation of the Tonga Health Dr Tapa Scholarship for students of health promotion and education.

For 26 years, Dr Tapa provided strong leadership as Tonga's delegate to the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific. Although currently retired and living in Tonga, he has been the longest-serving delegate to the Regional Committee.
