Dr Shin visits New Caledonia

NOUMEA, New Caledonia, 14 March 2012 – WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr Shin Young-soo rallied here behind efforts to improve New Caledonians' quality of life and access to quality health care.

New Caledonian President Harold Martin expressed his country's determination to improve health in the Western Pacific Region, including by implementing strategic controls against such emerging diseases as pandemic influenza.

Programmes for health promotion and education, disease prevention and health care financing have been strengthened in New Caledonia, Mr Martin said, stressing the need to address the rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases. Dr Shin called for sustained efforts to encourage healthy lifestyles.

Dr Shin accepted from Mr Martin a metallic statue of a bird representing New Caledonia's racial and ethnic diversity.

Mr Martin and Minister of Health, Madame Sylvie Robineau honoured Dr Shin at a reception.
