Maternal and child health

It is the right of every mother and newborn child to survive pregnancy and childbirth and to have a safe pregnancy. Families, communities, local government units and the national government have the responsibility to prevent their deaths.

WHO supports work in developing evidence-based policies and strategies to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. It also seeks to improve the health and nutrition status of women of all ages, especially pregnant and nursing women.
