Injuries and violence kill more than five million people worldwide annually and cause harm to millions more. Injuries can result from traffic collisions, drowning, poisoning, falls or burns, and violence from assault, self-inflicted acts or war. They account for 9% of global mortality, and are a threat to health in every country, particularly in the developing world.
WHO supports efforts to develop and implement national policies, programmes and legislation on injury prevention; to promote public awareness and political commitment; and to strengthen national capacities in surveillance, intervention and monitoring.
