Health sector development
The WHO Philippines advocates that health system issues should be addressed, to successfully achieve universal health coverage. There is a need to implement enlightened leadership and good governance practices; accurate and timely information and feedback on performance; financing that lessens the impact of expenditures especially among the poorest and the marginalized sector; maintain a competent workforce; sustain accessible and effective medical products and technologies; and deliver appropriately essential health services. All these are health system strengthening challenges.
The Country Office works with the Department of Health, local government units and other sectors as it seeks to help improve the Philippine’s health systems’ performance. It aims to improve national and local capacity to diagnose health systems constraints as well as in policy analysis and management. WHO also seeks to promote broader engagement of various sectors in health sector policy processes and strategies. Without strong policies and leadership, health systems do not spontaneously provide balanced responses to these challenges, nor do they make the most efficient use of their resources.
