Philippines launches World Report on Disability
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative Dr Soe Nyunt-U, and World Bank (WB) Group Acting Country Director Ms Chiyo Kanda, led the launch of the World Report on Disability in the Philippines at the opening ceremonies of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Community-Based Rehabilitation Congress on 29 November 2011 at the Hotel Sofitel, Manila. About 640 CBR practitioners and advocates from 63 countries and high-level cabinet officials led by DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman and DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima witnessed the launch.
The World Report on Disability is a joint undertaking of the WHO and WB Group. It provides an overview of the status of disability in the world as well as global estimates of persons with disabilities. The global prevalence of disability is estimated at 15.6% of people 15 years and older. The report recommends that governments and their development partners do more to improve the rights and participation of people with disabilities in society.

Learning, relearning and making progress: Staff Development Learning (SDL) in Tagaytay

The country office team, headed by WHO Representative in the Philippines, Dr Soe Nyunt-U, attended a 3-day T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieve More) Building Workshop. The workshop was facilitated by Mr Mike Joseph of Performex, Inc. and aimed to reinforce the core team building skills , recognize and work with the team’s strengths and successes, and align goals and expectations.
Various team building strategies from indoor to outdoor exercises brought out the team spirit, enhanced leadership qualities and competitiveness of each of the participants. At the end of the workshop, everybody agreed that teamwork WORKS!

Regional Director visits Mindanao
Dr Shin Young-soo and Dr Soe Nyunt-U visited one of the referral hospitals in Manolo Fortich while in Mindanao. Also in photo are: DOH Secretary Enrique T. Ona, Usec Teodoro Herbosa, Asec Nemesio Gako, and regional and hospital directors and staff.
Upon the invitation of Department of Health’s Secretary, Dr Enrique T. Ona, Regional Director of Western Pacific Region Dr Shin Young-soo embarked on a 2-day visit to Cagayan De Oro and Bukidnon last July 12 and 13.

Measles Campaign Kicks Off
Hundreds of Paranaque residents trooped to the Paranaque Sports Complex last April 4 to witness the launch of Ligtas sa Tigdas ang 'Pinas campaign of the Department of Health. The campaign was led by DOH Secretary Enrique T. Ona, NEC Director Eric Tayag, WHO Representative Dr Soe Nyunt-U , Paranaque Mayor Jun Bernabe, WPRO OCC Director John Ehrenberg and participated in by UNICEF and USAID. The campaign targets about 18 million children nine months to below 8 years old.
