Western Pacific Regional Consultation on the Second Global Malaria Action Plan (2016-2025)

12 to 13 June 2014

Background

The World Health Organization is in the process of developing new global malaria policy documents. As part of this, a draft Global Technical Strategy (GTS) for Malaria: 2016 2025 has been developed. In a complementary process, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership is developing the second Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP2) for the same timeframe. The GTS will serve as the technical foundation of GMAP2. Consultations in all WHO regions are planned prior to finalizing these documents. The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific is organizing these regional consultations back to back.

The GMAP2 will provide the global framework that will allow for advocacy, fundraising, partnerships and multisectoral collaboration, which will be necessary to operationalize the GTS. This is particularly critical in view of the current severe global financial restraints.

The consultation will be attended by representatives of Ministries of Health and national malaria control programmes of the 10 malaria-endemic countries in the Western Pacific Region, members of the GMAP2 Task Force and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, development partners, representatives of international organizations, civil society, academia and the private sector.

Objective:

  • To review and provide feedback on the draft of the second Global Malaria Action Plan of the RBM GMAP 2 Task Force, focusing on specific Western Pacific Member States' needs, priorities and prerequisites to be considered in the document.
