Summary

The Asia-Pacific region is at the forefront of global economic development. Yet some countries and population groups are being left behind in poverty. One of the factors impeding development is a large burden of communicable diseases, especially in vulnerable populations, which perpetuates the cycle of poverty and poor health. Much of this burden can be attributed to neglected tropical diseases, a group of diseases caused by many different organisms.
