Malaria, other Vectorborne and Parasitic Diseases (MVP) unit addresses two major public health challenges in malaria and dengue, and an additional thirteen priority neglected tropical diseases reported from the region. As part of effectively addressing these challenges the unit adopts integrated approaches included under three cross-cutting areas that have been identified as follows:
Integrated Vector Management
Integrated vector management (IVM) is an approach to managing vector populations in such a way as to reduce or interrupt transmission of disease.
Quality assurance for malaria and NTD laboratories
The Malaria, other Vectorborne and Parasitic Diseases (MVP) unit has been advocating the strengthening of malaria and neglected tropical diseases laboratories in the Region for fast and accurate diagnosis.
Research on infectious diseases of poverty
Despite recent progress towards the control and elimination of these diseases, the Region is facing new and emerging threats including multidrug resistant malaria, increased risk to vulnerable populations, and the effects of climate change. Research plays a critical role in tackling these challenges.
