Immunization is one of the most cost-effective tools among other public health interventions. Mongolia started immunization services in 1961 and a national immunization program (NIP) has been implemented since 1993. The immunization program has been very successful as reflected in historical low levels of morbidity and mortality attributable to the diseases currently targeted by the national immunization program.
Country has well-functional immunization services in all levels of health system. Mongolia has achieved regional goals on maintaining polio-free status and controlling hepatitis B. Verification of Regional goal on measles elimination is under preparation.
Apart from traditional or routine EPI vaccines, Government of Mongolia is now considering the benefits of new vaccines such as pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines. Also, improvement of EPI performance at a district level is more challenging in the context of the rapid socio-economic development of the country. Comprehensive Multi-Year Plan on Immunization, 2011-2015 has revised in line with the Global Vaccine Action Plan.
