Alcohol

WHO Mongolia is working to reflect the key strategies of the Global Strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and Regional Strategy to reduce alcohol-related harm into Mongolia context.

Alcohol dependence and the harm caused by alcohol have become major public health and social concern in Mongolia. Harmful use of alcohol has been implicated in injury and deaths resulting from traffic accidents and domestic violence, as well as illness and resulting from heart disease, hypertension, stroke and liver cancer. The WHO supported epidemiological study in Mongolia in 2005 found that 14% of the total population were alcohol dependent. Around 9% of all respondents (10,157) were admitted to a sobering up station during the previous year, 2% received compulsory treatment for alcohol problems, 3% received treatment for alcohol problems, and 4% received advice or treatment from a family doctor for alcohol problems.

WHO continuously provides technical assistance for policy development, capacity building and multisectoral collaboration on alcohol control within NCD prevention and control umbrella
