WHO turns spotlight on Asian health issues

Putrajaya, Malaysia, 8 October 2010

The Regional Committee is the governing body of WHO in the Region and is composed of representatives from the Region's 37 countries and areas. Close to 150 representatives, including several Ministers of Health as well as members of nongovernmental organizations, will be attending the meeting.

Important health issues up for review include:

  • health systems strengthening and primary health care;
  • establishment of healthy environments using settings such as schools;
  • tuberculosis control;
  • vaccine-preventable diseases;
  • progress towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals; and
  • protecting health from the effects of climate change.

Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, will report on the Organization's activities in the Region over the past year. The sessions will also discuss future health directions that WHO, in collaboration with its Member States, will take to improve the health of people in the Region.

Journalists are welcome to cover the sessions of the Regional Committee and to conduct interviews with the specialists. A press conference has also been scheduled 1:00 p.m. on 10 October 2010 at the Nikko Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
