WHO Event Management Group activated for Japan earthquake response
MANILA, 12 March 2011— An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the north-east coast of Japan on 11 March 2011 at 05:46:23 GMT, triggering a tsunami that devastated the coastal areas of Tohoku and southern Hokkaido. This was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. Over 600 people had been confirmed dead, with more than 1000 injured and over 600 still missing.
The WHO Western Pacific Regional Office has activated its Event Management Group to coordinate the response to the earthquake. The Event Management Group has been monitoring the evolving situation closely. The Event Management Group is also in close communication with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan and WHO offices covering countries under tsunami alert.
“The World Health Organization extends it sympathies to the people and Government of Japan and stands ready to provide any necessary support to the victims of this terrible tragedy,” said Dr Shin Young-soo, Regional Director for the Western Pacific.
