Message of Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, to commemorate World Malaria Day 2010
25 April 2010 marks the third commemoration of World Malaria Day. This year's theme is
"Counting Malaria Out". In the Western Pacific Region, our slogan is ‘‘From Control to Elimination”.
In 2006, the United Nations Secretary-General called for universal access to malaria prevention and control by the end of 2010 and the elimination of malaria deaths by 2015. In 2007, the World Health Assembly, in Resolution WHA60.18, called for a broad range of national and international actions to scale up malaria control and elimination programmes.
The burden of malaria in the Western Pacific Region has been reduced significantly over the past decade, marking a milestone on the road to malaria elimination. From 2000 to 2008, the number of confirmed malaria cases fell by 38%, with 246 546 cases reported in 2008. During the same period, mortality in the Region was reduced by 57%, to just 1005 reported deaths. Unfortunately, many cases and deaths still go unrecorded.
