H1N1 now in post-pandemic period

News release

Hong Kong, 10 August 2010 – WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan announced today that the H1N1 influenza virus has moved into the post-pandemic period. However, the pandemic 2009 virus is still circulating in some parts of the world and is likely to continue to do so for a number of years. As is being seen in New Zealand, this continued circulation of the virus is resulting in outbreaks of disease with the pandemic 2009 virus remaining the dominant strain. Dr Chan was speaking at a virtual press conference in Hong Kong, after hearing an assessment of the pandemic situation earlier in the day from the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee.
