Reducing health inequities, building better lives



The China National Health and Family Planning Commission and WHO launched the Western Area Health Initiative to improve the health and well-being for the most vulnerable populations in western China.

On 18 July 2012, the Western Area Health Initiative was launched in Beijing. This initiative is a collaboration of the Ministry of Health of China, the World Health Organization and three sub-national level governments to improve the health of the people living in the western part of China.

This formal launch, with signing of a memorandum of understanding by representatives of the Ministry, the three target regions of Shaanxi Province, Chongqing Municipality and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and WHO, represents a major step in WHO’s work and relationship with China.
