World Health Organization Western Pacific Region

Sixty-third session of the Regional Committee

The meeting was notable for its historic emphasis on nutrition and food security. An entire afternoon was devoted to a panel discussion about the subject. The panel included Dr Shin and his counterparts from three other United Nations agencies: the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the Food and Agriculture Organization. The participants agreed that proper nutrition is key not only to prevent the twin burdens of overnourishment and undernourishment in children and adults, but also to achieve other important public health goals, such as prevention and control of the noncommunicable diseases. The delegates passed a resolution endorsing the scale-up of efforts to improve nutrition in the Region.
