Five Member States in the Western Pacific Region report new cases of influenza A(H1N1)

MANILA, 15 June 2009, 1600 hrs—Australia reported 84 new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) as the number of infections in the Western Pacific Region climbed beyond 2700. No deaths from influenza A(H1N1) have been reported in the Western Pacific Region.

China reported 39 new cases of the virus, while 28 new infections were announced in New Zealand, 13 in Singapore, and one additional case in Viet Nam. The Western Pacific Region has reported a total 2724 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1):

  • 1542 in Australia
  • 320 in China
  • 549 in Japan
  • 7 in Malaysia
  • 71 in New Zealand
  • 111 in the Philippines
  • 59 in the Republic of Korea
  • 40 in Singapore
  • 25 in Viet Nam.

China's new cases included the locally acquired infections of three students at a secondary school in Hong Kong (China), where a cluster of cases was reported last week. The new cases reported in Australia take that country's caseload to 1542, the highest in the Western Pacific Region.

Most of Australia's cases were detected in the state of Victoria, where health authorities have reported that they are focusing efforts on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, students at special development schools, hospital patients and people with a chronic illness.

New Zealand has reported 71 cases after 28 new infections were detected since the previous reporting period. Thirteen new cases were reported in Singapore, all of which were related to recent international travel. Viet Nam's additional case was a 2-year-old child whose family members had recently travelled to the United States of America.

Global influenza A(H1N1) case count

As of 15 June 2009, 74 countries have officially reported 30 120 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, with 145 deaths. Mexico has reported 6241 laboratory-confirmed human cases of infection, including 108 deaths. The United States of America has reported 13 217 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including 27 deaths. Canada has reported 2978 laboratory confirmed human cases, including four deaths. Chile has reported 1694 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including two deaths. Costa Rica has reported 104 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death. Dominican Republic has reported 91 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death. Guatemala has reported 74 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death. Colombia has reported 35 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death.
