MANILA, 12 June 2009, 1600 hrs—China reported 28 new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1), taking its total count to 220 as the Western Pacific Region's tally rose above 2200. No deaths from influenza A(H1N1) have been reported in the Western Pacific Region.
On 11 June, WHO raised the influenza pandemic alert level for the virus to Phase six, signifying that the beginning of a global epidemic was underway.
The Western Pacific Region has reported a total 2266 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1):
- 1307 in Australia
- 220 in China
- 518 in Japan
- 5 in Malaysia
- 27 in New Zealand
- 92 in the Philippines
- 53 in the Republic of Korea
- 21 in Singapore
- 23 in Viet Nam.
China's new cases include 11 infections from the same class of a school in Hong Kong (China), none of whom had a history of recent travel, or any contact with symptomatic people from affected areas.
Australia reported 44 new cases to take its total count beyond 1300. Most of the Australian cases have been detected in the state of Victoria, where health authorities have reported that they are focusing efforts on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, students at special development schools, hospital patients and people with a chronic illness. All Australian states and territories have reported confirmed cases of the virus.
The Philippines declared 15 new confirmed infections to reach a total 92 cases. The new cases in that country comprised 10 males and five females aged between nine and 50 years. All were Filipinos. Eight new cases were announced in Viet Nam, four in New Zealand, and three in Singapore.
Global influenza A(H1N1) case count
As of 12 June 2009, 74 countries have officially reported 27 965 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, with 141 deaths. Mexico has reported 5717 laboratory-confirmed human cases of infection, including 106 deaths. The United States of America has reported 13 217 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including 27 deaths. Canada has reported 2446 laboratory confirmed human cases, including four deaths. Chile has reported 1694 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including two deaths. Costa Rica has reported 93 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death. Dominican Republic has reported 91 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death.
