Expanded programme on immunization

Vaccinate at birth, protect for life

Newborns at the NICU

At the PGH, critically ill babies that go to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) do not receive the hepatitis B vaccine until they are discharged from the unit. It is the shift nurse who is responsible for giving the vaccine when the baby is discharged. The mother is likewise given a note documenting the date this dose is given.
