Human resources for health

Health workers are at the heart of the health care system, affecting access to care as well as the quality and cost of effective delivery of services. Many countries in the Western Pacific Region continue to struggle with addressing their human resources for health challenges. Ministries of health are often over burdened with operational aspects of personnel administration leaving insufficient attention given to overall planning to ensure that human resources for health match the needs of the countries’ health systems.

The Human Resources for Health Unit brings to countries a wealth of expertise in all aspects of human resources and supports countries to develop a strategic vision for the health care workforce, strengthen human resources for the strategic planning, implementation and monitoring of health care and align high-quality workforce education with health needs.
