What we do

  • Support countries to undertake health workforce planning.
    • Strengthen national health workforce planning capabilities to facilitate the attainment of appropriate staffing levels and health workers skill-mix.
    • Develop and review national health and human resource management policies, plans and guidelines.
    • Provide technical cooperation and guidelines for HRH legislation.
  • Promote health workforce production and training
    • Undertake training needs analyses and educational situational analyses to identify scope for further technical collaboration in the areas of education, distance education and continuing or inservice education.
    • Strengthen training programmes and the linkages between training institutions.
    • Assist in improving the quality of education, particularly for the core competencies of health workers; the health of populations and community-oriented primary health care; and the use of appropriate and high quality clinical teaching and assessment methods in educational institutions.
    • Help strengthen the leadership and management capabilities of all categories of health workers.
    • Develop guidelines to facilitate the progress of health professional educational institutions towards accreditation.
  • Strengthen health and human resource management, by providing technical support to countries to develop, monitor and enforce health service standards and professional standards.
  • Provide support for activities focused on mid level and nurse practitioners.
    • Provide continuing technical support to develop and strengthen mid-level and nurse practitioner training programmes and for the appropriate deployment, utilization and professional development of these categories of health workers.
    • Conduct workshops to continue to strengthen the clinical teaching skills of mid-level and nurse practitioner trainers.
    • Undertake consultations with Member States on findings from the evaluation study of mid-level and nurse practitioners and methods to support their practice and professional development needs.
    • Provide technical support for the continued development and dissemination of evidence-based treatment guidelines (protocols).
