It was the first time that a consensus was reached upon a working definition of transgender people in Asia and the Pacific.
Persons who identify themselves in a different gender rather than that assigned to them at birth. Explanatory note: They may express their identity differently to that expected of the gender role assigned to them at birth. Transgender persons in Asia and the Pacific region often identify themselves in ways that are locally, socially, culturally, religiously or spiritually defined.

The WHO regional offices for the Western Pacific (WPRO), the
South-East Asia (SEARO) and the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) held a Consultation on HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and other health needs of transgender people in Asia and the Pacific,
11-13 September 2012, Manila, Philippines. The three-day event was jointly organized by WHO in collaboration with the Regional Offices of the United Nations Development Programme UNDP, the Join United Nations UNAIDS Programme on HIV/AIDS, and Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN).
Report on HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the Western Pacific Region: 2000-2010
4 June 2012 - The WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) issues a report that documents the achievements and challenges of the health sector's response to the HIV epidemic in the Region over the past decade.
The last report on HIV and sexually transmitted infections was published by WPRO in 1999. The focus of this Regional report is to bridge the gap in knowledge and history.
WHO-NIH Informal consultation on antiretroviral treatment as HIV prevention: Implementation science in Asia
Five countries in Asia – Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam – have announced plans to implement treatment (TasP) as prevention in different settings and populations. Given the lack of studies and trials on TasP conducted in the context of low-prevalence and concentrated epidemics, such as those found in many Asian countries, implementation research will play an important role to answer how best to implement TasP.

Antiretroviral therapy
203 000 people were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the Western Pacific Region as of December 2010, a more than tenfold increase from the 17 000 observed in 2004. Coverage of ART across the Region reached 43% [39%–51%] of the estimated number of people eligible for ART.

Prevention of mother to child transmission
5200pregnant women living with HIV had received antiretrovirals for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission in 2010, accounting for an estimated coverage of 36% [30%–43%] in the Region.

Paediatric HIV
9700children below the age of 15 years were on antiretroviral therapy in the Region in 2010. These accounted for about 42% [36%–49%] of the estimated number eligible for treatment.
