World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific

Chemical safety

Starting in the late 1980s, the safety and control of toxic and hazardous chemicals has become a major concern in rapidly industrializing countries in the Western Pacific Region. In response, WHO established a chemical safety programme to support the efforts of countries in the Region in developing systems to control toxic chemicals and hazardous substances. The programme focuses on the provision of chemical safety information and development of legislative and institutional frameworks to control the manufacturing, importation, use, storage, transport, and disposal of potentially toxic chemicals and other hazardous substances.

WHO assists countries in building capacity to provide timely and adequate information and to respond to emergencies involving chemicals. Specifically, WHO supports the use of the WHO environmental health criteria and other relevant documents on chemical safety; the translation of documents into local languages; the establishment/strengthening of chemicals information/poison control centres; and the development of relevant legislation on the control of chemicals.
