Senior Steering Group Meeting on the Regional Strategy on Health Systems Strengthening and Primary Health Care
Date: 23-25 February 2010
In September 2008, the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific Region passed a resolution (WPR/RC59.R4) calling on the Regional Director "to develop, through a process of consultation with Member States, a regional strategy for strengthening health systems, based on the guiding principles and core values of primary health care and informed by the outcomes of the ongoing and midterm reviews of the implementation of existing strategies and other related technical work, and present this Strategy in a high-level meeting in 2010 as well as the Regional Committee in 2010.
A draft strategy has been prepared by the WPRO Secretariat based on the recommendations by the two expert meetings. A consultation on the draft strategy has begun with key informant interviews in Member States and consultation with various experts.
A senior steering group has been formed to guide the work of the WPRO Secretariat in conducting the consultation process, analysing the results of the consultations with experts and Member States, and in developing further versions of the regional strategy to present to the proposed high level meeting in June 2010 and to the Regional Committee Meeting in September 2010.
The objectives of the meeting were:
- To review and analyse the results of the consultation process on the current draft regional strategy on health systems strengthening and primary health care.
- To recommend changes for the second draft of the regional strategy on health systems strengthening and primary health care.
- To review and make recommendations concerning the process for taking the draft regional strategy on health systems strengthening and primary health care forward to the high level meeting in June 2010 and the Regional Committee in September 2010.
