FAO/WHO Meeting on Food Standards to Promote Health and Fair Trade in the Pacific
Summary
The meeting addressed two key areas for action in the Pacific:
- strengthening food laws, regulations and standards; and
- enhanced monitoring and enforcement by authorities of compliance by industry and importers.
It was determined that three public health issues would be addressed through coordinated action: (1) noncommunicable diseases, (2) micronutrient deficiencies, and (3) food contamination and food safety. The meeting concluded that the Pacific island countries and areas could benefit from a regional approach to food and nutrition.
