Summary

An Agreement for Performance of Work (APW) was contracted with Mr David John Fredericks to monitor implementation of country-specific research projects financially supported by WHO in Cambodia and Viet Nam and to provide technical support to the respective institutions to assist them in finalizing their research reports. The Terms of Reference are: 1) to conduct a mission in Ha Noi, Viet Nam and a mission in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to assess in each country the progress of WHO-supported reserach on simple low-cost technologies suitable for use at household level for mitigating the health effects of arsenic and fluoride in drinking water;2) to advise the respective research institutions in each country on technical issues that may have arisen in the conduct of their research and to make recommendations as may be appropriate to ensure timely completion of contracted research within budget and to a high degree of technical excellence, and to submit those recommendations to WHO in the form of country reports; and 3) to submit research reports suitable for submission to scientific journals, co-authored with the respective researchers. The WHO/UNEP/ADB High Level Meeting on Health and Environment in 2004 funded by the Japanese Government identified human exposure to unsafe levels of arsenic and fluoride in drinking water as a priority environmental health issue in Asia. In the long term large investments in infrastructure are required to provide safe water to all through the provision of alternative water sources, however, household level treatment technologies for removal of arsenic and fluoride were identified as a potential interim solution.Report on the Summary of Mission to Cambodia and Viet Nam
