Summary

In 1996, a cross-section survey was carried out to assess the situation of epidemic communicable diseases and relevant environmental factors. The survey covered four districts of four provinces. The result of this survey indicated rather high prevalence of epidemic communicable diseases. Intestinal diseases had the highest prevalence rate and was closely related to polluted environments particularly shortage of proper toilets and source of clean water.Implementing the Resolution of the 4th Congress of the Party CC on health upholding the principle of active prevention and Ministry of Health guidance on primary healthcare promition, the Preventive Medicine Department was assigned with the task of directing and executing the "Healthy families" starting in 1997. The objective of this project was to strengthen environmental hygiene and active prevention of epidemics and gradually contribute to socialization of health services.
