Dengue Situation Updates

Regional dengue activity is variable. Lao PDR, New Caledonia, Philippines and Singapore have reported more cases in 2013 than 2012 for the same time period. The recent trend continued to increase sharply in Lao PDR and Singapore, increased in Cambodia and Malaysia, while remaining stable in the Philippines and Australia and declined in New Caledonia and Solomon Islands.


Asia Sub-region

Australia: Monthly trend decreased slightly from April to May 2013. 112 cases were reported for May 2013, compared to 138 cases in May 2012.

Cambodia: Weekly trend has slightly increased based on the three week moving average. 207 cases were reported in the week 8 to 14 May 2013 compared to 556 cases in the same week for 2012. 2538 cases (15 deaths) were reported up to 14 May in 2013.

Lao PDR: The number of cases remained above the epidemic alert level and the weekly trend continued to increase based on the three week moving average. 1182 cases (4 deaths) reported 25 – 31 May 2013 compared to 129 cases (0 deaths) in the same period for 2012, with a sharp recent increase. 6377 cases (26 deaths) were reported up to 31 May in 2013.

Malaysia: Weekly trend increased based on the three week moving average. 564 cases (1 death) reported in week of 26 May to 1 June 2013 compared to 349 cases in the same period for 2012. 10 401 cases (19 deaths) reported up to 1 June in 2013.

Philippines: Weekly trend decreased based on the three week moving average. 740 cases reported in week of 19 to 25 May 2013. 37 895 cases (172 deaths) reported up to 25 May in 2013.

Singapore: The number of cases remained above the epidemic threshold and the weekly trend continued to increase based on the three week moving average. 746 cases reported in week of 26 May to 1 June 2013 compared with 81 cases for the same period in 2012. 8483 cases reported up to 1 June in 2013.

Viet Nam: Up to 20 May in 2013, there have been 13 903 cases (10 deaths) reported compared to 14 943 cases (2 deaths) for the same period for 2012. There were 2 142 cases (0 deaths) reported from 1-20 May 2013.

Pacific Sub-region

New Caledonia Weekly trend decreased based on the three week moving average. 180 cases reported in week of 26 to 1 June 2013. 10 072 cases reported up to 1 June in 2013.

Solomon Island As of 5 June 2013, 6082 cases reported (513 additional cases from the previous report 2 weeks ago); numbers of reported cases continue to decline over the past few weeks in affected provinces except in the western province. Surveillance and response activities, including clinical management, are still ongoing.
