In 1953, the Ellice Islands (former name of Tuvalu) was assigned to the Western Pacific Region at the Sixth World Health Assembly ''without prejudice to any questions regarding sovereignty'' as an area. It was administered by the Western Pacific High Commission until its independence on 1 October 1978. It joined WHO on 7 May 1993 as a Member State.

It is covered by the WHO Representative Office in the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.
