Demographics
In 2009, American Samoa had an estimated population of 65 113. Based on 2009 population estimates, around 35% of the population is below 15 years of age, while 4% is above 65 years. Life expectancy at birth for men is estimated to be 69.3 years, while for women it is 75.9 years. The crude birth rate of 30.0 per 1000 population in 2000 is estimated to drop to 23.5 per 1000 population in 2010, with a crude death rate of 4.5 per 1000 population.

In May 1953, American Samoa was assigned to the Western Pacific Region at the Sixth World Health Assembly ''without prejudice to any questions regarding its sovereignty'' as an area. The United States of America still remains responsible for American Samoa’s defence and foreign affairs and represents American Samoa at the Regional Committee.
The WHO Representative Office in the South Pacific covered American Samoa from 1956 to 1 October 1986 when the WHO Representative Office in Apia, Samoa was established to cover Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tokelau.
