According to the national census in 1999, the population of Vanuatu was 186 678; the 2004 estimated population is 215 541.  Around 41% of the population is below 15 years of age.  The crude birth rate, according to the 1999 census, is 28.2 per 1000 population, the total fertility rate is 4.8, and the infant mortality rate is 27 per 1000 live births.  Most of the population are employed in subsistence agriculture; the rest are employed in government posts, service industries and light industry.
