The resident population of New Zealand on 30 June 2004 was estimated at 4 061 400, representing an increase of 52 200 or 1.3% over the previous year.  There were an estimated       1 997 700 male and 2 063 700 female residents – around 103 women for every 100 men.  Women have outnumbered men since the late 1960s.

New Zealand continues to give priority to ensuring that ODA activities foster the role of women in development.  The ODA program recognises that the roles that women play, their economic contribution and the constraints on their time and activity, are essential factors in sustainable development.  The review of the Women in Development (WID) Plan Action concluded that significant progress had been made both in terms of increasing support for WID specific activities and in integrating gender considerations into all projects and programs.
