Among the resident population, 48.1% were males and 51.9% were females.  As regards distribution by age group, 18.6% of the population were aged 0-14 and 7.9% 65 and above.  Compared with 2002, the proportion of residents aged 0-14 dropped 14 percentage points, while those aged 65 and above went up 0.2 of a percentage point.

The natural increase of the population is an important factor in population growth.  In Macao, 3212 live births and 1474 deaths were recorded in 2003, up by 1.6% and 4.2% respectively compared with 2002.  The natural growth rate was 0.4%.
