Nauru is located 60 kilometres (km) south of the equator in the central South Pacific Ocean. The single island has a total land area of 21 km2 and the population in the 2002 census was 10 065. Historically, Nauru's main economy has been phosphate mining, but other forms of economic activity are being sought, such as fisheries.
