Located in the Western Pacific, the Federated States of Micronesia consists of some 600 islands grouped into four states: Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk (Truk) and Yap.  While the country’s total land area amounts to only 701 square kilometres (km2), it occupies about 6.7 million km2 of the Pacific Ocean and ranges 2 736 km from east (Kosrae) to west (Yap).

Pohnpei island alone constitutes about one half of the total land area and is home to about one third of the population.  More than half the population lives in Chuuk State, which consists of many small atolls and lagoon islands.

The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent country in a Compact Free Association with the United States.
