China is undergoing rapid urbanisation and motorization. Over the past 20 years the number of vehicles on the road has increased more than tenfold. Accidents involving driver, passengers, or pedestrians are a leading cause of injury-related death. This amounts to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year.
China is one of 10 countries included in a Road Safety project (RS10) funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. RS10 is being conducted over five years (2010-2014) by a consortium of six international partners. In China, the project is led by the Ministry of Health. The overall goal of RS10 is to support participating governments in implementing better practices in road safety strategies, and to reduce injuries and death caused by drink driving and speeding.
