Maternal and child health

China has made great achievements over the past two decades in reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR), infant mortality rate (IMR) and under-five mortality rate (U5MR) from 80 per 100,000 live births, 50.2 per 1000 live births and 61 per 1000 live births, respectively, in 1991, to 26.1 per 100,000 live births, 12.1 per 1000 live births and 15.6 per 1000 live births respectively in 2011.

The status of maternal and child survival has improved remarkably and China appears to be on track to achieve the fourth and fifth Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
