Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the population. They are selected with regard to disease prevalence, evidence on efficacy and safety, and comparative cost-effectiveness.
Since 2009, China has started the reform of the essential medicine system. The essential medicines list (EML) is incorporated into insurance reimbursement lists. China continues to develop its list of essential medicines and the health systems that support it.
